One-day leaders' summit
On Saturday, Coach Rachel, Coach Collin, and Coach Lucy took a one-day leader's summit put on by the Utah League. In the classroom we learned some of the key points in being a good coach, including managing risk to keep all the student athletes safe. In the afternoon, outside, we learned how to break down important mountain bike skills into separate parts so that our learners can more easily pick up on these important skills.
We are dialed for skills clinics now!

The rodeo had left the parking lot a mess, so Instructor Judd used the landmines as obstacles around which to demonstrate proper turning technique. |

Practice at Trailside Park
Friday we practiced at Trailside Park in Park City. We started with some time at the pump track ...
and then hit some of the trails, including the downhill slalom. It was a lot of fun while still working on skills.

Besides Coaches Jordan and Coach Travis, a couple of parents joined us too, which made for a great mix.

First practice of 2013
We just issued gear and went over a few things at our first short practice of 2013.
Coach Drew gave a demonstration on how to change a flat.
Then we played "last foot down".
Our next practice is Friday when we will get to ride for real.

We love this video! Myat, our team captain, put it together after our first year of racing. It brings a tear to my eye.

Name Change
We have changed our name from East High Mountain Bike Club to SLC Conglomerate MTB Team and we are no longer officially affiliated with East High School, although the majority of our student athletes are from East. The change allows us to recruit and coach any 9th - 12th grade student at any Salt Lake City area high school that does not have a high school mountain bike race team at his or her school. Welcome to students at East, West, Highland, and others.
We did this so that students from other schools could participate in one of the coolest sports around. Also, East has a rule that clubs must not have outside adult leadership. Our parent league, NICA, and our local league, the Utah High School Cycling League, have too many excellent resources to wave all that way just so we can be an official club at East. We think the change will be good.
