HS MTB practice and race #1 Schedule 2,4,6 September

Student athletes and parents,

Two great practices this week.  We have a brief 2 week window between summer vacation and the first race.  Many of you this summer were training with other mountain bike teams, traveling out of town on vacation, and participating in other events.  It is great to see all of you at practice this past Tuesday and Thursday with over 16 students participating in each practice.

This week we will have practice on Tuesday and Thursday at the same Red Butte location.  Tuesday will be another cardio workout and Thursday will deal with an intermediate cardio output ride, discussion of racing strategy, and a review of bike maintenance that will ensure a great race for you on 6 September.

Many of you have questions regarding the race.  Please check the Utah League web page which will hopefully answer many of them.

Race #1 race flyer:

By now you all should have logged in to the Pit Zone to confirm that your student athlete is "Race Ready".  If he/she is not and you need to fill out forms required to race please bring them to the race registration tent on 6 September.

Adults:  We need volunteers to help bring food to the event.  You will be reimbursed for expenditures.  If interested in helping out please reply to me so we can coordinate.

MTB Practice Thursday 21 Aug and RSVP request

Student athletes,

School is fast approaching and many of you are busy preparing for the upcoming academic year. Unfortunately our attendance rates have fallen drastically for practices recently. Tomorrow's practice I have 4 adult volunteers for 3 students. The time commitment for everyone is very involved and I will make adjustments to the schedule as necessary so that all involved have a positive experience.

While we make our way through this transition from summer vacation to the school year I am going to request that you RSVP for practices until further notice. This includes practice tomorrow 21 August. I will send another email to the team this evening after I finish work (9pm). Based on the number of student athletes who RSVP I will adjust the staffing and location of practice if necessary.

Drew Jordan

Practice canceled Tuesday 19 August

-The curse of the Mormon Pioneer Trail has struck once again.  Due to inclement weather and the fact that the trails are currently in bad shape we have canceled practice today.
____________________________________________________

-In preparation for the first race I have highlighted some of the major race rules.  Please review the following: (note for a complete list refer to the NICA race course rulebook (http://www.nationalmtb.org/wp-content/uploads/NICA-Rulebook.pdf)

2.1 ANY TIME YOUR LEG IS OVER THE TOP TUBE OF YOUR BIKE WITH THE INTENT OF RIDING YOU MUST HAVE A SECURED HELMET ON YOUR HEAD!

-NICA student-athletes must wear an approved helmet at all times (see rule 4.1 for list of approved helmet standards). Under no circumstances shall a student be on their bicycle without a helmet fastened to their head, even when riding a very short distance. Student-athletes must also keep their helmet on when walking or running on the course with a mechanical problem. See rule 4.1 for additional details regarding helmets. [ORANGE LEVEL CONSEQUENCES]

2.18 LIST OF OTHER BANNED SUBSTANCES (B-LIST)

-Caffeine is an addictive substance that enhances performance. NICA leagues deem caffeinated products as inappropriate for young student-athletes. Caffeinated sport products (bars, gels and sport drinks) are banned from NICA league races and activities (including practices). Soda or coffee products containing caffeine are also banned from being consumed by NICA student-athletes at NICA league races and camps.

-Creatine, GuaranĂ¡ Root and Taurine are also substances banned from consumption at NICA league races and camps.

-Student-athletes need to be very careful as many energy drinks contain these substances. Student-athletes are responsible for knowing the ingredients of the products they consume. Pleading ignorance will not constitute a defensible position. [ORANGE LEVEL CONSEQUENCES]

6.15 PASSING SLOWER STUDENT-ATHLETES
-When passing on the race-course, do so respectfully and only when it is as possible to do safely and without contact. Actions that compromise the safety of other student-athletes will not be tolerated. Call out when passing slower racers. "Tracking left" indicates you will be passing on their left, "tracking right" indicates you will be passing on their right. [ORANGE LEVEL CONSEQUENCES]

6.16 BIKE PUSHERS MUST YIELD

-Racers riding bicycles have the right of way over racers pushing bicycles. When practical, racers pushing shall stay on the least rideable portion of the trail when being passed. A racer pushing or carrying his/her bicycle can overtake a racer riding their bicycle provided they do not interfere with the student-athlete's progress. [ORANGE LEVEL CONSEQUENCES]

6.17 LAPPED STUDENT-ATHLETES MUST YIELD

-Lapped student-athletes must yield to overtaking student-athletes. Student-athletes shall voice the command "Tracking left" or "Tracking right" when overtaking another. Student-athletes being passed must move over as quickly, efficiently and as safely as possible.

6.18 LEADER OWNS THE TRAIL BUT CANNOT BLOCK

-In the event two student-athletes are vying for position, the leading student-athlete does not have to yield his/her position to the challenging student-athlete. However, a student-athlete may not bodily interfere with the intent to impede another student-athlete's progress. Traditional rules of racing apply: the leading student-athlete owns the trail.

6.19 LAPPED STUDENT-ATHLETES MAY BE PULLED

-Lapped student-athletes may be pulled from the race at the finish line. At the league director's or a race official's discretion, a student-athlete may be pulled from a race at any location on the course due to circumstances that make it unsafe for the student-athlete to proceed. Student-athletes that are pulled out of the race must not continue and will be placed according to their position at the time they are pulled.

6.20 TIME LIMITS MAY BE IMPOSED

-Student-athletes may be asked to withdraw at the finish line after time limits have been reached. Race officials reserve the right to determine these time limits at anytime. Time limits may be imposed for reasons that include, among others: Safety, heat, cold, rain, muddy conditions, clearing the course, and relieving course marshals. Course closures may be announced at anytime and do not need to be announced in advance.

-If a student-athlete makes the time cutoff but does not complete the final lap due to a mechanical, crash, or other reason, it is considered a DNF.

-Race Officials may also, if deemed appropriate, opt to pull an individual student-athlete who appears to be overheated, hypothermic, overly exhausted, or in anyway injured, over-stressed, or at risk of injuring themselves.

6.21 CUTTING THE COURSE

-Except in the case of injury, NICA student-athletes are not allowed to cut the course, ride off course, or engage in any other behavior that would indicate an intention of unfair play. [RED LEVEL CONSEQUENCES]

-Student-athletes must not deviate from the edge of the trails (as defined either by ribbons, or an obvious change in surface or foliage characteristics) by more than 3 feet. [ORANGE LEVEL CONSEQUENCES]

-When the trail is clearly on one side of a pole, tree, or other characteristic, then the student-athlete is required to pass that feature, on the trails side of the feature. [ORANGE LEVEL CONSEQUENCES]

-A student-athlete may not leave the prescribed course unless ordered or permitted to do so by public authorities or a race official. In the case of mechanical problems, student-athletes shall walk along the course to the finish line. In the case of medical emergencies, student-athletes shall remain still and wait for a course marshal or medical help.

HS MTB Weekly Practice update & Wasatch 360 six hour MTB race update

Student Athletes and parents,

1)  Please keep an eye on the them webpage regarding Tuesdays Practice.  Right now we have a 50% chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon along the Wasatch Front.  I will make a decision around 2pm regarding practice being a "GO" or "NO GO".  If we have to cancel practice due to weather I will post it on the team website.

____________________________________________

2)  Practice on Saturday is canceled…………… Many of your coaches and fellow student athletes will be participating in the Wasatch Back 360.  This is a 6 hour MTB race being hosted up in Heber UT this upcoming Saturday 23 August.

3)  Are you interested in racing on Saturday?  So many questions and so little time to register (20 Aug before the race fees go up)…… Stop rubbing your eyes and patting your head….. You can do this!

Here are the details:

OK…. lets get down to the race particulars
-10.4 miles per lap
-1050 feet of climbing per lap
-It is a relay race…. Each of you takes turns out on the course.
-You can sign up as a solo, 2 person, 3 person team.  You can sign up with other student athletes or you can sign up with one or both of your parents.  The options are infinitesimal!
-We will have tents set up in the transition zone and many of your coaches will be racing alongside you….. Thats right…Tons of support.  The biggest issue for you the student athlete….. getting to the start line at 8:30am!

Question:
-Coach I have never done a race before…
Answer:
You can do this!……..If you have 3 student athletes racing on a team you will do approximately 2 laps…. 20.8 miles of racing and 2,100' of climbing.  Psssst…..little known secrete…. All of you have been riding 16 miles and 2,200' of climbing during our Saturday practices!

Question:
-Coach how do I get to the race venue
Answer:
We will set up transportation from the Sugarhouse SHOPKO.  Yes it will be early (6:30am) and no we will not wait for you if you are late….. Tough MTB love!

Question:
-I want to race but I do not know who to race with.
Answer:
-Hey…. You want to race….. Tell me you are interested and I will try and match you up with other students.

Question:
-I can not afford to race
Answer
-Grrrrrrrrrrr….. All of your adult volunteers have worked hard to make sure you can race.  If money is an issue just let me know.  You show us the "will" and we will make it happen!

ANY QUESTIONS…… TEXT OR CALL ME!

1st wave Missing Team Jersey orders / 2nd wave extended until Sunday 11:59pm

Student athletes and parents,
It is starting to become apparent to me that some of you who ordered jerseys during the 1st round of jersey orders have not received them. The order process was completed in-house at Blackbottoms and I do not have a master copy of the orders. Currently Lucy and I have a few jerseys in our possession that have not been handed out.

If you ordered a jersey during the 1st order window and not yet received one please email me at your earliest convenience. If Lucy and I have your jersey in our possession I will let you know. If we do not possess it I will refer you to the owner of Blackbottoms. Please be prepared to show method of payment, vendor transaction number, and jersey size ordered. Mr. Elggren is very committed to the high school program. We just got off the phone with one another and he will be making a special production run to correct the missing jerseys. He lives and rides locally in SLC and he is committed to correcting this issue expeditiously. The benefit of working with Blackbottoms is that there is no middle man or multiple production levels. When there is a problem the action taken on their behalf is almost immediate and this issue will be corrected quickly. Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience.

Note: if you have not ordered a jersey the 2nd wave window has been extended until Sunday 11:59pm.

Summit Bike Club race anyone?

The Summit Bike Club is putting on a bike race on Saturday Aug 23 near Heber. It will have a special category for junior racers.  Are there any team members planning to race this? Is there interest from enough of us to have a team tent there?

This would be a good way to test out your fitness level and racing skills before the first high school race.  We'll talk more about it on Saturday at practice.

Here is the link to read more about it.

HS MTB Practice Schedule 12,14,16 August

Good news...... Bad news!

The first race is less than 1 month away!....... The start of school is less than 1 month away!

IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION REGARDING PRACTICE CANCELLATIONS DUE TO WEATHER CHECK THE TEAM WEB PAGE……. LAST MINUTE NOTIFICATIONS WILL BE FLASH POSTED TO OUR TEAM WEBPAGE!!!!!!!!!!

Listed below is the weekly practice schedule.  This week we will have many new adult volunteers out on the trail with you.  Please be courteous and take a moment to introduce yourselves.  Our three teams have grown to almost 40 students and we want to ensure that when you come to practice that riders of all different abilities have an adult to work with and help them improve.  I will return from Colorado on the 17th and I look forward to seeing many of you at practice on the 19th of August.  We will focus our practices on the trails up at Bob's Basin on Tuesday and Thursday.  This trail system has it all with climbs, switchback descents, and the option to test your skills on some technical terrain.  With less than a month to go it is exciting to see those of you new to the sport starting to tie together your basic skills with your desire to race cross country.  Another great race season is about to kick off and all of you are going to be in the center of it!  The coaching staff is very excited!………. Let's ride!

Aug 2 Round Valley practice

Saturday we shredded Round Valley to build massive cardio.  Here are a few pics.

First day with the new jerseys.

Steep hills are no match for our Freshman girls!

JERSEYS ARE HERE

The jerseys have arrived in SLC!  We have started to hand them out to the student athletes.  If you missed the first order I am coordinating with Blackbottoms to set up a second order.  My best guess is that the second order would be available prior to the second HS MTB race.  The price for jerseys during the second round is $45.  The reason for the increased price of $10 per jersey is due to the fact that our order numbers are expected to be below 13 units per team.

Minimum jersey order 6 units
Quantity 6-12  $45
Quantity 13-20 $35

Start lining up family members, friends, teachers that would be interested in ordering jerseys.  We will hopefully open the on line ordering program soon.  More information to follow shortly.

HS MTB League financial scholarship form

For any student athlete requesting a financial need based scholarship please complete a scholarship form, available for printing here, and return to the address listed on the bottom of the form.  This scholarship, if awarded at 100%, would pay for your registration with NICA and your race entry fees ($250).  This is a time sensitive application and you should have your form submitted no later than 8 Aug.

HS MTB Practice Schedule Aug 5,7,9

If you ever have questions about practice being canceled due to weather remember to check here. Sometimes we have very little time to get the word out if a quick moving storm comes through the area so bookmark this address and go to the source....

Below is the training program for Aug 5, Aug 7, and Aug 9 and carpool sign up links.  Please note each day has a specific link so be sure to click on the link for the day(s) you need to carpool.
Please remember that if you sign up for a slot but then can no longer attend remember to remove yourself from your slot to allow another student athlete the chance to carpool.  We will be adding more drivers soon.  If a spot is not available please put your name on the wait list.
